How can I prepare for the SSC CGL Exam for upcoming SSC CGL?
This Answer is Based on Qualified SSC CGL candidate (Topper's Experience).
This answer is given by Sachin Malik got selected as ASO in MEA in CGL 2017
I think he have Cleared that exam. So, he will be suitable to answer this question.
His Score -
Tier 1 = 171
Tier 2 = Maths 171, English 183.25
Tier 3 = 61
Total = 586.25
How did he start Preparation?
He started his preparation just after finishing his college that was in June and prelims was in august. So, effectively he had 2.5 – 3 months.
He had made his plan in college itself ( Because, months of april and may, he spent in searching strategies, doing vocab in bits and pieces, and making a solid plan). Before coming home from college, he knew exactly what he need to do.
Before starting his strategy it's always better to understand where he stood ( in terms of his knowledge about core subjects like English, maths etc. ). So, in terms of knowledge base, he said that, he is not weak in maths { that doesn't mean he knew tips and tricks etc. and he could have done questions based on arithmetic (needs to be done in 1 min. ) in 2–3 minutes by conventional equation making methods }.
In english His grammar was poor, he had no knowledge about HAS, HAD, HAS BEEN etc., Apart from WAS, WERE . Zero knowledge in GK and reasoning was Ok.
What Strategy he Follows?
For weakest part GK :-
Took it seriously, because he always believed GK is the one that differentiates if you are ending up in double digit rank or not.
• He made 2–3 notebooks, partitioned them in each subject like history, polity, economics, physics, chemistry, biology , geography etc.
•Followed some online videos which were of Ssc Cgl level.
{Few mentions like -Dhiraj chouhan sir's polity lectures on unacademy, ankit shrivastva history lectures etc.}
•Made notes out of them with some space on each page (for adding further information).
•Then He picked up KIRAN 10000+ G.k questions book, did each section question by question and adding all the new information he got in his notebook (the space which was left on each page). By doing so, his notes were so thorough that his confident level boost up and was sure of getting 40+ marks.
• For Current Affairs he picked up cloud affairs monthly magazine and made notes out of it for last 6 months
For Maths :
• He understood all the concepts from 'E1 Coaching center' Youtube channel, and He found this guy genuine and each chapter was completed by him thorough.
•He made notes of each chapter and after finishing it. Picked up Rakesh Yadav Maths 7300+ ( kiran is equally good.
• He Did whole book (According to him, in arithmetic if you understand the concept skip the repititive questions, but he will suggest to do every question of Advance portion).
• After doing this, He just did mocks for prelims and for mains after prelims.
For English :-
He divide English in three portion
(1)Grammar,
(2)Vocab, (3)Comprehension
For Grammar :-
•He suggested to picked 'Plinth to paramount' from neetu singh and did each chapter and made notes out of it,
•He did all the exercises given in book. For error spotting He did Mirror of common errors completely
For Vocab :-
•He Picked compilation of previous year vocab that is one word substitution, idioms, vocab.
•He did it every single day. (Give 1 hr daily for it and revise the previous day's vocab everyday)
•This small steps will give you 2000–3000 words
•Also read 5–6 articles (which you find tough) from 'THE HINDU' newspaper and 'Indian express', extract all the new words you find and write down in your notebook with their meanings with some examples of them.
•Do this exercise daily RELIGIOUSLY for whole journey i.e even after prelims, and you will be good to go.
For Comprehension :-
•He adviced to read 5–6 articles which he have mentioned above plus read, listen, watch everything in english, be it news, movies, TV series
For Reasoning :-
•Daily do 50 questions of reasoning ( you can follow 'adda 247' quizzes for practice),
•Understand the concept behind the question you found difficult and note that down in notebook.
•There are only few concepts like syllogism, clock, dice do that from youtube (only 3–4 days work)
For Mock Test (very important) :-
• He said that 'If someone asks me what's the secret of high marks in SSC CGL' , then he would say MOCK, MOCKS AND MOCK.
• He can't take stress on this point more. Do as many Mocks you can do.
• Nothing is enough to be serious. In his case he did 50 prelims mocks (felt short of time, could have done more).
•During mains he did 70–80 maths mocks and 40–50 English mocks. He did mocks from Testbook, Pinnacle, ssctube, Qmaths and M.B. publication previous year sets
How to avoid stress and be Motivated?
This exam is tough just because of competition, although it's not that tough on syllabus basis, but competition is what makes it tough. So only THAT CANDIDATE who has BURNING DESIRE to crack it will only get through, if you think by some dilly-dally attitude you can crack most probably you will end up with 2800 grade pay job or with no job
Just think EVERY SECOND YOU ARE WASTING, SOMEONE ELSE IS STUDYING.
You will have days like when you will doubt yourself, you will feel like not studying, those are the days on which you have to rise up and show your character. Just Put your head down and start studying, problems will melt away, believe me
Conclusion
At last He said - "I will feel obliged if someone gets benefitted from this"
